Typesetting and Printing Occupations DVD

An original production published by The Classic Archives!

Typesetting involves the presentation of textual material in graphic form on paper or some other medium. Before the advent of desktop publishing, typesetting of printed material was produced in print shops by compositors working by hand, and later with machines.

The general principle of typesetting remains the same: the composition of glyphs into lines to form body matter, headings, captions and other pieces of text to make up a page image, and the printing or transfer of the page image onto paper and other media. The two disciplines are closely related. For example, in letterpress printing, ink spreads under the pressure of the press, and typesetters take this dynamic factor into account to achieve clean and legible results.

This DVD pays tribute to that occupation as it once was.  It is meant to entertain, enlighten and educate.  Great for scholars, students, teachers, and history buffs alike.

Printing (1947)

Printing occupations, opportunities and technologies before electronics and computers changed the world.  Working in a small print/copy shop, it's hard to believe how much has changed since the days when this film was made.   It details the vocational possibilities available in setting and operating type machines. And while in some cases devices like these are used (especially in the presses), most of it has been replaced by desktop publishing software and digital printing.  As a printing hobbyist, it's fascinating to see these old machines. Great stuff.

Typesetting Linotype (ca. 1960)

Fascinating film about what is now primitive and obsolete technology to set and mold type.  Shows you equipment that they used to automatically select the type, spaces, and prepare the mold.  The machine is explained step by step, and doesn't get very complicated for those that are inexperienced.  For those of you who are curious about how books, magazines, and newspapers were made before desktop publishing, this film will show how a linotype works.  Lots of nice illustrations and demonstrations of the mechanics.
