Freedom Highway (1956)

A Greyhound bus transports us through the landscape of American mythology.  It follows a long Greyhound bus trip from SF to Washington DC, with everyone keeping up a great attitude even though they've probably been traveling for days on end. The story follows a number of characters, a boy meeting his troop in Washington, A disgruntled man picking up a congressional medal of honor for his late son, a bit of a laughable love story between a football player and a lady, and a bit of a mystery passenger who's identity, well, still remains a mystery. While all of this is going on, we get history lessons about what made America so great as they pass by each location (The Alamo, Boston Tea Party etc). And even Tex Ritter pops in for a scene or two and says he prefers hopping on the Greyhound to get a glimpse of the country. History and present time is intermixed quite well, providing education value as well as entertainment.

America For Me (ca. 1950s)

Two young women take a Greyhound Bus tour across America. Includes a love story.  As the bus tours the American countryside, you will see many historic tourist sites of interest.  There's even a sing along on the bus, a big ole' shiny happy moment of the 50's!

The Bus Driver (1946)

Father and son travel by bus from New York to Pittsburgh in the days when bus travel still attracted elite passengers.  First leg of the trip is a journey from New York to Harrisburg, PA, apparently along US Route 22, then Mr. Fisher gets relieved, and the new driver gets to drive the bus to Pittsburgh along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, then regarded as one of the most ultramodern roads in the country. Lots of neat shots and run bys in the countryside, and a few quick shots in the metropolitan areas, and Mr. Fisher's rather uncomfortable appearance in front of the camera!  An interesting look at what bus travel was like around 1950.

Transportation, Bus, Train, Taxi

Fun little ‘Your Life’s Work!’ film that this time, focuses on what you need in order to work in the transportation industry, more specifically, The Bus, Trucking and Taxi companies. Let’s go over the primary first requirement shall we?

1) Be a male.

This is probably the most sexist Your Life’s Work I’ve seen yet. It’s hilarious how the narrator pauses for effect on the “He” when mentioning the first requirement on being a Bus driver. You can be a bus driver, cab driver, mechanic, dispatcher, executive, the sky’s the limit! But you have to be Male! Male! Male! As a matter of fact, we get a tinge of excitement when we DO see a female working in a transportation area job. Of course, she’s the secretary of some executive hot-shot. It all becomes rather depressing after awhile.

Aside from that, there’s great footage of old time vehicles here. Surprisingly, not much has changed in the shape or function of these vehicles.
