Britannica is the oldest English language encyclopedia that is still in print.  Originally published starting in 1768 in Edinburgh, it quickly grew in popularity and size.  The 3rd edition in 1801 reached 20 volumes.  The rising stature of Britannica helped recruit eminent scholars as contributors.  The 9th edition is regarded as a landmark encyclopedia for scholarship and literary style.
