We've all worked in retail jobs growing up.  Who among us has never punched the keys on a cash register?  Its part of America.  Part of growing up and getting that first job.  This DVD is a tribute to how those jobs once were in the golden age.  Before bar scanners, before computerized registers, and when customer service really mattered.  This collection is meant to educate, inform, and entertain.

This DVD runs about an hour and 10 minutes and has a fully interactive menu.  A list of films is as follows:

The Front Line (1965)

If you've ever wanted to get a glimpse of how grocery store checkers performed their duties prior to the advent of barcode technology, this film produced by Reader's Digest will certainly be of interest. After an introductory segment that emphasizes the rivalry that exists between grocery stores and the importance of providing quality service, viewers are introduced to fledgling checker Ms. Jones, a young lady who seems quite eager to succeed but doesn't have a particularly easy time managing the many obstacles that arrive at her counter. Fortunately for her, a trio of veteran checkers are on hand to help demonstrate to the jovial new recruit how to deal with various difficulties. It's quite interesting to see how the film depicts the stature of the job, and there are plenty of humorous moments that will hold your attention. The absence of plastic bags is also quite noticeable.

Quality Control in Modern Merchandising (1952)

A film which explores, mainly through textiles, mainly shirts and shoes, the many tests the fabrics go through in order to meet JC Penney's standards. While we get the run of the mill factory shots here, the shots of the merchandise as it's given to the customer after it's sold is the real highlight. Items are wrapped in brown paper, stuff is folded just so, and people were given what could be called a shirt box to keep the shirts from getting wrinkled.

The Troubles of a Merchant and How to Stop Them (1917)

How a storekeeper's business suffers due to lack of financial controls and how installation of a National Cash Register restores its profitability. One of the many early educational/training films sponsored by communications visionary and NCR president John H. Patterson.  Amazing when you consider this film is 90 years old, yet the problems they face are not unlike what is faced today.
