Vintage Drug Abuse Propaganda Films DVD

An original production by The Classic Archives

Vintage collection of anti-drug propaganda movies made by the government to show the youth of this country how dangerous drugs are.  These films were a first shot at the war on drugs in America.  Who better to tell you how to act and behave than the federal government?  Seen through the eyes of today's youth, these films would probably offer little more than comic relief.  But the lessons shown here, can still be applicable.

Baby Boomers, educators, scholars and students alike can relate to sitting in a classroom and watching these movies.  Perhaps for some, they may trigger some memories of an innocent youth.  For others, they may provide a good laugh.  While they may be outdated in their approach, their historic significance to post-war pop culture makes them quite interesting for all.  Provided here on DVD, to cherish forever.

Well over 3 and a half hours of historic, vintage footage.  DVD comes with a fully interactive menu.  A list of movies in this collection is as follows:

Distant Drummer 1972

Traces the history of opium and how it has led to the present day usage of heroin. Examines the methods and procedures of organized crime in transporting the drug to the United States and its toll on the streets of America. Includes methods of combating the problem and interviews with addicts who discuss their compulsion for drugs. Narrator: Paul Newman. Directors: Charles E. Francis, William Templeton. Producer: Frank Kavanaugh.

Drug Abuse The Chemical Tomb 1969

Interesting anti-drug film criticizing drug use as an inhibitor of necessary social change. Director: Alan Kishbaugh. Camera: Charles Sutton. Narrator: Chuck Bowman.  A surprisingly introspective approach to the national drug problem, considering the era it was made in. The film professes to "...try and cut through the undue propaganda on both sides of the drug problem" with drug guide, Dr. John T. Boroughs [Med.Dir.Narc.Edu, LA], who is friendly and entertainingly comfortable with street-drug nomenclature.  It also suggests that the police should not be the only ones involved in the counter effort. Enough cheesy displays of drug use and psychedelia to satiate the retro-novelty seeker.

Drug Addiction 1951

Classic "slippery slope" narrative of post-World War II stoned slackerdom.  It tells the story of Marty, a nice, clean-cut 50s teen who succumbs to peer pressure and tries reefer. Before you know it, he’s a junkie mainlining heroin, and then experiences the inevitable downward spiral of losing his part-time job at the grocery store, worrying his parents, getting snubbed by all the other clean-cut teens, turning to shoplifting and thievery to support his habit, and finally becoming a drug pusher. Eventually he gets arrested for all of this and, after his mother tearfully tells the judge that he’s a “good boy,” gets court-ordered into substance abuse treatment. But after he gets out of rehab, all the nice teens still shun him and he has to contend with pressure from his old junkie pals to start using again. This well-worn story is told in an incredibly dorky and hyperbolic fashion––highlights include Marty’s friends getting sick when they first smoke marijuana (Marty also feels sick but hides it––the sign of a true addict-in-the-making), Marty and his friends drinking Pepsi from broken bottles while in a hopped-up state, Marty’s mother trying to talk to her surly son about her worries about him, and the post-rehab Marty trying to resist the pressure of his old junkie pal, Duke, to start using again. For those who like to laugh at anti-drug films, this one is a classic.

Narcotic Pit of Despair 1967

Dark vision of drug use and its effect on American youth. Interesting film with Kevin Tighe from the 1970's Emergency show starring as a person who spirals quickly down in various drug addictions. "Only squares get hooked" the narrator tells us in this voiced over film. This film depicts the character Hank (with narration) in a course of shooting smack -101. The party's over when the the swinger Helen is jonesing in police custody.

Reefer Madness 1938

Considered THE archetypal sensationalized anti-drug movie, but it's really an exploitation film made to capitalize on the hot taboo subject of marijuana use. Like many exploitation films of the time, "Reefer Madness" tried to make a quick buck off of a forbidden subject while skirting the Motion Picture Production Code of 1930. The Code forbade the portrayal of immoral acts like drug use. (The illegal drug traffic must not be portrayed in such a way as to stimulate curiosity concerning the use of, or traffic in, such drugs; nor shall scenes be approved which show the use of illegal drugs, or their effects, in detail.)

The film toured around the country for many years - often being re-edited and re-titled ("Tell Your Children", "Dope Addict", "Doped Youth", "Love Madness", "The Burning Question"). It was re-discovered in the early 1970s by NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) and screened again as an example of the government's demonization of marijuana. NORML may have been confused about the film's sponsorship since one of the film's distributors, Dwain Esper, testified to the Arizona Supreme Court that "Reefer Madness" was not a trashy exploitation film but was actually sponsored by the U.S. Government - a convincing lie, but a lie nonetheless.

That being said, the film is still quick enjoyable since it dramatizes the "violent narcotic's ... soul destroying" effects on unwary teens, and their hedonistic exploits enroute to the bottom.
