Buck Rogers:
Buck Rogers was a comic strip that appeared
in the America's newspapers, so it was a natural for radio
action, too. It had several time slots and sponsors on radio
during the 1930s, and the shows from 1938-39, running on Mutual,
re-tell our hero's beginnings to get us kids ready for action as
Buck blasts off on more exciting space adventures in the
incredible future of the 25th Century.
After his 1930s adventures, Buck Rogers was "lost in space"
until a return to Earth radio in 1947. Many actors played the
parts throughout the decades.Buck RogersBuck Rogers was a man of
our time who got trapped in a cave-in in an abandoned mine, and
was subjected to a mysterious gas that held him in suspended
animation until he was discovered in the 25th century. He was
resusitated by the good inventor and scientist Dr. Huer.
The Doctor had an assistant who was a Lieutenant in the Space
Corp, Wilma Deering. Buck catches on to the marvelous inventions
and ways of the future, and sets off on adventures against space
baddies with the help of Wilma and other space friends such as
Black Barney, a dense Martian pirate turned sometimes sidekick.
Buck and his friends from the future battle evil forces led by
Killer Kane and Ardala Valmar, who like to steal new technology
and generally work at getting themselves a piece of the action,
regardless of the means. In the 25th Century, dedication to the
work at hand was still a hallmark of the successful, whether
good or evil.
This battle of good vs. evil might have meant much more in the
fall of 1939 as the War officially began throughout Europe, and
threatened America.Buck Rogers in the 25th Century was one of
the earliest of the juvenile adventure serials of the 1930s, and
kids of that decade also listened to the serials Tarzan, and The
Air Adventures of Jimmy Allen. In the 1940s, there were many
shows for kids, both in the fifteen minute serial and regular
half-hour.

Flash Gordon:
Flash Gordon blasted into amazing
inter-planetary adventures on California radio in 1935,
thrilling West Coast whiz kids and adults alike.
Gale Gordon, whose career spans decades (as well as galaxies),
plays all-star American athlete Flash. Gordon career includes so
many shows, he deserves his own collection disc! A few of his
starring roles were Dr. Petrie on Fu Manchu, Mayor LaTrivia on
Fibber McGee and Molly, Rumson Bullard on The Great Gildersleeve,
Mr. Atterbury on My Favorite Husband, and Principal Conklin on
Our Miss Brooks. He was also in the star-studded Cinnamon Bear
children's classic. Of course, he took his Mr. Conklin on to TV,
and movie buffs know he played many fine comedy roles on the
silver screen.
Meanwhile, back in outer space - Flash is accompanied by his
beautiful American sweetheart, Dale Arden, and Dr. Zarkov, a
great scientist. Our heroes fly to the planet Mongo, ruled by
Ming, a merciless dictator who threatens his world with weapons
of mass destruction. (Sound familiar? It did in 1935 too...)
Sadly, we don't know who played Dale, but Ming was portrayed by
Bruno Wick... a great name in itself.
Gale GordonThe Flash franchise has offered inspiration for many
creative imaginations. The Hearst comic strip featured the
wonderful artistry of Alex Raymond, and the fine Republic Serial
series of Flash Gordon adventures starring the most excellent
Flash, Larry "Buster" Crabbe flying wonderfully clunky
sparkler-driven rocket ships. Yet these radio adventures are
high-flying fun, and comics fans will love the list of comic
favorites in commercials for the Hearst 32-page Comic Weekly. In
the last of the shows, which seems to now be lost, Flash and
pals land back on Earth in the jungle, and hook up with Jungle
Jim (another Hearst property)…who thus begin his own adventurous
serial career on radio.

The
Avenger:
One of the hippest and generally fun
manifestations of the SpyFi genre was the 60’s TV hit The
Avenger. The BBC production was filled with British
eccentricities, but the tongue in cheek humor, multitude of
beautiful assertive women and constant action made it a hit with
American audiences as well.
The show did not take off in South Africa, however, because of a
lack of TV broadcast facilities in the country. However, after
the TV show went off the air, Springbok Radio began producing a
radio version of the series. Although some of the characters
were streamlined and combined, the show was a long running hit.
